Kisoro International Vocational Institute (KIVI) is a vocational education and training institute (CTVET) that was established on 9th September 2011. Its main mission is to help the local community in Kisoro district, Uganda and its neighborhood, and the entire Virunga massif, particularly girls and those who failed to have university education and other institutions of higher learning. The school mostly targets vulnerable children orphans and marginalized group of people, the pigmies.
The institute’s other missions is to provide affordable education to needy children, offer youth and adults a curriculum that comprises literacy, technical and vocational courses at certificate and diploma levels, encourage the learners to develop their special talents in co-curricular activities and provide a learning environment that nurtures industry, ethics and integrity.
With girl-child education a major hot topic globally-where girls have lesser access to educational opportunities- than the boy-child, the focus on training opportunities for girls is a major benefit that focuses on.
The programs run here are gender-friendly. They include Hotel and Tourism Training, where the certificate course targets students interested in gaining skills in the field of hotel management, tour guiding, cooking and tourism management. Courses offered include: Introduction to World Travel, Hotel Enterprise Management and Sustainable Travel & Tourism.
The Motor Vehicle and Mechanics course teaches basic mechanics, vehicle operations and driving. Select topics include: Engine Visuals and Explanations; Engine Systems, Principles & Operations, and Vehicle Operation.
The Nursery Teaching course focuses on providing students with inert skills in Early Childhood Education and Nursery Teaching. The curriculum covers topics such as Introduction to Early Childhood Development, Child Growth and Development.
The students go for an internship of between three and six months and the organization ensures there’s a strict follow-up after their training to make sure they are prepared fully for the challenging job market.
Vocational training as that provided at KIVI may play a greater role in ensuring girls and other vulnerable members of the society get jobs. The training normally includes development of technical capacity, business skills and entrepreneurship. Vocational training is ideally a demand-oriented and it builds particular skills that are tailored to potential needs of employers.
The Virunga Community Programs partners with KIVI to make sure that the challenges most of the students face are addressed, and they go through their training programs uninterrupted.
The challenges mostly are to do with financial constraints. Most of the trainees are unable to afford scholastic materials they desperately need to accomplish their studies. They lack books, modern learning devices like computers and enough teachers.
Virunga Community Programs calls upon volunteers and other people who want to help and support KIVI to do so. There are many areas the organization needs help to fully achieve its noble mission, and with the help of everyone concerned with education of girls and the vulnerable members of the society, this is a noble mission you should participate in.
